Today we’re going to take a peak deep inside the workings of Procure Inc. and the den of code that makes the entire thing tick. We’re also going to have some downtime coming up for maintenance to our site, planned maintenance so we can give you a little heads up. Downtime – Friday 4/19/19 During the day on Friday our website will be offline or intermittently available starting at 10 AM Eastern Time and continuing until 6PM Eastern Time with the potential to be extended into the weekend. During this time, you will not be able to access any portion of the site. Why The Downtime? We’re going to be applying a significant update to our site. In testing, we’ve found this particular update to be more time consuming to apply than we’d like. From start to finish, our best deployment time was two hours on our development systems, and we’ve done this enough times to know it never goes that smoothly for the real show. How Do You Update a Site? That’s the boring stuff out of the way. Let’s look at the cool part of this: I get to geek out at you and Lead Sales Guy Scott about how our website works, how the internet works, and a very basic idea of what we do to keep it all working. The Servers Every website comes from a server of some sort. This is a computer that runs […]
Today we’re going to tear down the tech-curtain and look at something we don’t often talk about: how our site works and what happens when it doesn’t. This past week a few of you may have received errors while trying to place orders. We only learned of it after a few angry customers called after their twentieth check-out attempt Monday afternoon. What Happened? Sometime over the weekend of the 21st, a glitch surfaced on our site which caused products not to show. This literally happened while I was sitting on my roof to patch a little hole from some storm damage. It’s a fun time trying to diagnose a broken website from 20′ in the open air. My biography one day will probably be titled “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.” We concluded in the short term that a very important file got deleted by mistake and the solution was to just restore a back up of the site. Back-up done, site online, we decided to make some updates to the site while we were at it to prevent any future repeats of the same problem. In principle, our updates shouldn’t have broken anything. In principle curling stones shouldn’t curve to the side either, but they do. Some of our updated code referenced a new error logging system, which conflicted with the system used by our payment processing system, and things really fell apart from there. Our […]
Hello HVAC Readers, Customers, and Competitors! We’re launching a new Chapter for Procure Inc. Over the past few months, we’ve worked to develop a new site from scratch. We wanted to deliver a better experience, better pricing, and streamline our internal operations. Unfortunately, we hit a roadblock. For years, we’ve devised workarounds and setup clever tricks to make our eCommerce platform work. We took a system designed for a few thousand products and made it work with hundreds of thousands of products. Last Spring, we came to the decision that this was no longer sustainable. In order to move forward, we had to abandon pretty much everything. Our developers crafted a new site. Our sales and procurement teams re-processed all of our raw vendor pricing and data into a new format. We automated what we could and trained our team in the aspects of running a bigger, more complex site by hand. We even broke the site a few times, just to confirm that we could recover from a catastrophic failure in minutes and hours, instead of days as it had in the past. There are some caveats, for you, our dear customers. Your passwords are gone. When you make a secure system, it takes your passwords to its grave. We can happily say: We couldn’t pry, convert, or otherwise make your passwords work on our new system. Luckily, that is really the only big loss. Your correspondences with us, […]
Told you new stuff was coming! Today, we roll out the first of those changes: A new blog altogether! We’ve invested some money, sweat, tears, and tired fingers into switching to a dedicated blogging platform. We want you to have an easy, fast, simple, and straightforward experience. That’s everything from straight forward email subscriptions and notifications, a well organized site, and a nice design that’s easy on your eyes. Hopefully we’ve achieved those goals and more, but let us know. Is this the right track? Wrong track? Is there a feature we can offer that’ll make the blog better? We welcome feedback and topic suggestions! Keep an eye out. We’ve got a ton of new content coming, everything from Smart Thermostats to the inner-most workings of AC Systems.
Hey everyone! Procure’s blog/research/tech guy here! So, those last few weeks just flew by, right? And not a peep from us on the blog… or the history of the air conditioner (it was invented 115 years ago this July!). We committed to make content and then things got a little crazy here. We started looking into some new technology, Google changed their algorithm, and while the days grew longer, so did our work. Caught up in bringing you’re a better experience and better pricing, we forgot about our educational series. Today though, our blog is not forgotten! We’ll be getting back to making content again! Any topics on your collective minds out there? We’re going to get into talking about cooling tech and cooling season. Let us know in the comments below, by email, or a messenger pidgeon if you’ve got em’!
